Finnish artist Touko Valio Laaksonen (1920-1991) operated under the pseudonym, Tom of Finland, pioneered homoerotic fantasies of muscular hypermasculine men in uniform and on motorcycles. His work helped initiate a sense of pride for queer identity and aesthetics.
Tom of Finland's work is known and celebrated globally, with recent solo exhibitions including the Studio Voltaire, London, England (2024); Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland (2023); Fotografiska, Stockholm, Sweden; Gallery X, Tokyo and Osaka, Japan (2020); Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, MI (2018); among many others.
